Cell division by Mitosis

• Body cells contain two of each chromosome
• Chromosomes carry a large number of genes which determine many of our features
• When the DNA of a cell replicates, the cell grows and copies its internal structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes
• The cell cycle:

  1. The DNA replicates to form two copies of each chromosome
  2. Mitosis (one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell, the nucleus divides)
  3. The cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two identical daughter cells

  
• The functions of mitosis:

  1. Mitosis is essential for growth and development of multicellular organisms
  2. Mitosis takes place when an organism repairs itself
  3. Mitosis occurs during asexual reproduction
