Osmosis

Cards (3)

  • Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane.
  • Dilute solutions contain a high concentration of water, whilst concentrated solutions contain a low concentration of water.
  • When water moves by osmosis into an animal or plant cell, the water moving in will cause the cell to expand and may burst (not in plant cells due to cell wall). If the cell instead does the opposite and water leaves the cell by osmosis, the cell shrinks.
