Using resources

Cards (18)

  • What is the problems with LCA?
the pollutant effects are not straight forward and it is not easy to quantify the effects of pollutants so you have to use an outside source and not be biased.
  • What are the renewable energy sources?
sources of power that quickly replenish themselves
  • What is the alternative method of extracting metals?
Extracting copper-the high grade copper ores are running out so we need to extract more from the low grade
  • Why do we use copper?
    -high conductor of electricity
    -conductor of heat
    -malleable
    high m.p and b.p
  • What is potable water?
-water that is safe to drink
    -is not a pure substance
  • What is the sterlising process of water?
1)water is passed through a filter beads to remove differnt sized insoulble solids
2)it is put through sedimentary tanks
2)the water is sterilised to kill the microbes using (ozone,uv or chlorine)
  • What do we use finite resources for?
-Oceans and atmosphere are processed to provide energy and materials
-Have a limited supply that will eventually run out.
  • What is LCA (life cycle assesment)?
    1)extract & process raw materials
    2)manufacturing and packaging
    3)use & reuse
    4)dispose
  • What is BIOLECHING?
it is where we use bacteria to produce lechates that contain copper which can be extracted
  • What is the process of waste water treatment/sewage?
1)water is passed through a mesh screen to remove large bits
2)chemcials are added to make solids and microbes stick together to form sediment and sink
3)there is the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge
4)it is aerated so lots of oxygen is pumped to get rid of bacteria
4)the water is then sterilised with chlroine to kill any microbes left
  • What is PHYTOMINING?

is where plants grown in copper sites, they take up copper into roots,we burn them and get copper from the ashes
-we extract the copper using electrolysis
  • What do we use the Earth's resources for?
    -to provide food,warmth,shelter and transport
  • What is the process of potable water?
-Rainwater dissolves some gases from the air as it falls to the ground
    -rainwater collects-underground in lakes,in rivers
-water is passed through filter beads to remove differnt sized beads
-the water is sterilised to kill microbes
    -and is called fresh water
  • Ways of reducing the use of reasources?
    REDUCTION:limiting resources
    REUSE:glass bottles can be crushed
RECYCLE:metals can be recycled by melting and reforming
  • What happens if only sea water/salt is available?
    Desalination
Distillation-reverse osmosis which is caused by putting pressure on the salt water through the membrane from low to high concentration
  • What is advantages and dis for recycling?
adv- less acid rain, less waste landfill
    dis- collection problems,transport
  • What are the effects of steriliser used?
Chlorine-a toxic gas so the amount addded has to be carefully monitored
Using UV light-avoids adding chemicals btu is more expensive
  • What happens if there is only a limited supply of fresh water
deaslination which makes it pure, this involves distillation or reverse osmosis
both use a lot of energy
