  • Evolutionary Theory
Over time we gradually change so that we can adapt to the changes in the environment around us as this ensures survival of the species,As we evolve minor differences between individuals will occur and these new characteristics may become important for survival. When life becomes hard then the individuals who manage to survive and reproduce will pass on the genes to the next generation. Reproduction is essential for evolution as genes need to pass to the next generation to ensure they survive. Evolutionary psychologists believe that the mind has also evolved to adapt to the changing world such as the introduction of technology. They are particularly interested in studying genotypes - the ways in which our genes govern our behaviour, and phenotypes such as the ways in which our genes interact with the environment.
  • Natural Selection
The individuals that best adapt to their surroundings are more likely to survive and pass on their genes to future generations. This is often referred to as 'survival of the fittest', which means an individual who holds the best characteristics to meet the demands of the environment will have the best chance of surviving and reproducing. This way some genes will die out as they are no longer needed for survival. Sexual selection leads to some characteristics being passed on that ensure that reproduction occurs even though the behaviour attached to specific genes may not be beneficial such as characteristics that make individuals more attractive to a potential mate. This only ensures reproduction which leads to survival of the gene pool.
  • Evolutionary theory and aggression suggests males have evolved in order to protect their family so genes can be passed on to their children
    • Evolved to be more aggressive as this ensures they can survive a dangerous situation
    • Evolved to be more aggressive to be more attractive to a potential mate as shows they'd be prepared to attack other males to protect their family
    • Parents will act aggressively if children are threatened to ensures their genes will survive
    • Evolution suggests females may be less aggressive which explains why females tend to be more emotionally and verbally aggressive instead of physical
