Cards (11)

  • What is the function of the circulatory system?
To transport substances around the body.
  • What do red blood cells do?

Transport oxygen from the lungs to the cells.
  • What is the function of white blood cells?
The function of white blood cells is to protect the body against both infectious disease by engulfing pathogens and foreign invaders. It also makes antibodies & antitoxins.
  • What do platelets do?

    they produce blood clots.
  • State the word equation for aerobic respiration.
Glucose + oxygencarbon dioxide + water
  • Where does aerobic respiration happen?

    Mitochondria
  • What is blood plasma and state its functions.

Blood plasma is a yellow liquid.
    The blood plasma transports:
    blood cells.
    CO2 to the lungs.
    Urea to the kidneys.
Products of digestion from the small intestine.
  • State the function of red blood cells and their adaptations.
    -Transport oxygen around the body.
    -Biconcave shape (increases surface area).
-Contains haemoglobin (binds to the oxygen).
-They have no nucleus, making more space for haemoglobin.
  • State the function of white blood cells and their adaptations.
    -Part of body’s defence system.
    -Some can produce:
    -Antitoxins (neutralise poisons)
    -Antibodies (destroy pathogens)
    -Some can engulf harmful microorganisms.
  • What can blood clots prevent?
Blood clots also help prevent pathogens getting into our bodies.
  • Why do we need our blood to clot?
Because if we got a small hole in a blood vessel, blood would keep coming out until there was no pressure.
