The nervous system

• The central nervous system consists of the spinal cord and the brain
• The peripheral nervous system is the nerves that carry info
• The tiny gap where 2 neurones meet is called the synapse
• The signal passes chemically across the synapse to next neurone
• Sense organs detects changes called stimuli
• Sense organs contain specialised cells called receptors
• Sense organs contain specialised cells called receptors
• Receptors produce electrical impulses in response to specific stimuli
• Effectors are things like muscles and glands that produce a response to a detected stimuli -
• A reflex action is an automatic, rapid reaction to a stimulus without conscious thought
• A reflex action doesn't involve the brain
• The nerve pathway followed by reflex action is called reflex arc
• Receptors - sensory neurones - relay neurones - motor neurones - effectors
• Sensory, relay and motor neurones make up the coordination centre
