Offending (Ethnicity)

• Statistics suggest that proportionally more people from black and Asian backgrounds are stopped and searched, arrested and charged, and sentenced to prison, than their white counterparts.
• Black people are over 7 times more likely to get stopped and searched.
• The proportion of arrests that resulted from stop and search, accounting for 23% of total arrests, which has increased from 17% in 2016/17.

  • Crown Prosecution Service are more likely to drop cases against black suspects - perhaps due to the fact they are more likely to charge them with inadequate evidence
• British Asians in 2013 comprised of 6.4% of the population but accounted for 10.3% of all stop and searches.
• Gov.uk. tells us that from April 2020 and March 2021 black people were over 3 times as likely to be arrested as white people – there were 29 arrests for every 1,000 black people, and 9 arrests for every 1,000 white people.
