What are proteins?
Molecules composed
of carbon,
hydrogen
,
oxygen
,
nitrogen
and sometimes
sulfur
and phosphorus
Proteins form
small molecules
called
amino acids.
They are
20 different amino acids
How are proteins formed?
Formed by the
condensation
of
hundreds
or
thousands
of
amino acids molecules
in
long chains
Peptide links
are
links between adjacent amino acid molecules
Some are soluble in water- haemoglobin
Others are insoluble- collagen
Why do we need
proteins
?
used to
build muscle
to make
cells
and
enzymes
to make
antibodies
Foods that contain proteins:
beans
tofu
egg
meats
