Cards (2)

  • Neurogenic Claudication:
    • neurogenic = something arising from the nervous system
    • claudication = leg pain, heaviness or weakness when walking
    • Aggs: standing, walking, lying flat (lumbar extension)
    • Eases: flexing, sitting, using shopping trolley, walking up hill (lumbar flexion)
  • Neurogenic Claudication:
    • Not to be confused with Vascular Claudication - Caused by impaired blood flow to the muscles
    • How can you distinguish between them?
    • see if theres difference in flexion as flexion is an easing factor for neurogenic claudication but not for vascular claudication
    • Pain from neurogenic claudication eases faster
    • Neurogenic claudication may be present with radicular (and generally bilateral) pain as it arises from the spine
    • May be history of trauma or OA to lumbar spine
    • May have past medical/drug history that indicates their vascular system is compromised
