Social learning theory

Cards (5)

  • Social learning theory is splits into 5 stages
    1. Attention
    2. Retention
    3. Reproduction
    4. Intrinsic Motivation - you feel something e.g proud of yourself for robbing a bank
    5. Extrinsic motivation - you gain something physical such as money
    6. Vicarious reinforcement - watching your role models be rewarded from role models e.g watching older brother be praised for being in gang
  • Strength 1 of Social learning theory
Bandura found that children were more likely to copy the aggressive behaviour of a same sex role model rather than an opposite sex role model. This shows that people learn behaviours such as aggression by observing role models, supporting social learning theory.
  • Strength 2 of social learning theory
Becker found that watching television led girls to want slimmer figures due to the presence of slim role models which caused unhealthy eating behaviour. This shows that we attempt to reproduce the behaviour of our role models supporting social learning theory.
  • Weakness 1 of Social learning theory
Kendler found that identical twins have more similar levels of aggression than non identical twins do. This suggests aggression is genetic and not learned through observation contradicting learning theories.
  • Weakness 2 of social learning theory
Watson and Rayner found that Little Albert learned to associate the fear caused by the loud noise with the rat and not due to observing someone else being afraid. This contradicts social learning theory as it suggests we learn behaviours such as aggression through the association of a stimulus and response and not through observation.
