  • Not everyone in the Milgram study gave up their autonomy and entered into the agentic state (35%)- agency theory cannot explain individual differences in levels of obedience, thanks to individual differences
  • French and Raven (1959): Different people in different social situations have many types of social power: reward/punishment (coercive), legitimate, expert, or charismatic; this better explains the “motivational” aspects obedience and possibly Milgram’s results, as his researcher had some of these types of power
