Social Learning Theory

Cards (8)

  • Role Model
Significant individual in a person's life. You are more likely to imitate role models such as parents, teaches or idols
  • Vicarious Reinforcement
Reinforcement that is not directly experienced but occurs through observing someone else being reinforced for a behaviour
  • Self-efficacy
A person knowing their own ability to do something and being confident with it
  • Process of Social Learning theory
Social learning theory suggests we learn behaviours through observation and imitation. We learn behaviours more when the action is distinctive and it is a role model and even more if they are the same sex when we are alert.. We only copy behaviours we remember and the information of the behaviour is stored as visual and auditory information. Then we have to believe that we have the ability to reproduce the behaviour which is known as self-efficacy and be motivated intrinsically where we feel good about our actions and extrinsically where we get a physical reward through vicarious reinforcement.
  • Attention
We notice certain behaviours that are being modeled:
    Is the situation distinctive?
    Is the observer alert?
Is the role model of the same sex?
  • Retention
We only copy behaviours we remember:
Stored verbally and visually as visual images and auditory information
  • Reproduction
We only copy behaviours we are capable of
Self-efficacy- our belief and confidence that we can copy a behaviour
  • Motivation
Vicarious reinforcement - learning through the consequences of the role model actions/behaviour
Intrinsic motivation: doing an activity because i feels good
Extrinsic motivation: doing the action for a physical reward
