Ellis’s ABC Model AO3

  • +Real world application
Ellis approach to cognitive therapy is called rational emotive behaviour therapy REBT. The idea is that if a therapist rigorously argues with a depressed person the therapist can alter the irrational beliefs that are making them unhappy. David provides evidence that REBT can change negative beliefs and relieve the symptoms of depression. Therefore REBT has real-world value.
  • -Reactive and endogenous depression
Many cases of depression aren't traceable to events and its not obvious what leads the person to became depressed at a particular time. This type of depression is endogenous and Ellis‘ model is less useful for explaining this. This means that Ellis’ model can only explain some cases of depression and is therefore only a partial explanation.
