Cognitive approach argues that depression is due to negative/irrationalthoughts
CBT is a shortterm goal based treatment
CBT aims to identify and challengeirrationalthoughts through cognitive restructuring to produce more rational thinking
Three ways these can be challenged are:
Logical – does this negative thought make sense?
Empirical – is there proof to support the belief?
Pragmatic – does having this irrational thought help or hinder?
The client is given homework to keep practice the skills gained in therapy in the real world e.g. keep a diary where they identify and challenge their negativethinking
Behavioural strategies are also used to promote more rational ways of acting e.g. depressed people are encouraged to be more active and do activities they used to enjoy to improve mood
