Cards (4)

  • Occurs when an individual has less common characteristics, an example is IQ and intellectual disability disorder. Can measure this by doing an intelligence test, and plotting with the mean. Most people will get an average score, normal distribution.  If an individual scores below 70% they are liable for a diagnosis for a psychological disorder.
  • strength is the usefulness. It is used in clinical practice. It is both part of formal diagnosis as a way to assess the severity of symptoms, such as the diagnosis of intellectual disability disorder. An is the example of when used as an assessment tool Beck Depression  inventory a score above 30+ indicates severe depression. This shows that the value of statistical frequency is useful in diagnostic and assessment processes.
  • limitation is that the infrequent characteristics can be both positive and negative. We would view a person with a low IQ as abnormal and negative, whereas we would do the opposite for someone who had a high IQ. These examples show that being unusual or at one end of a spectrum does not make someone abnormal. This means that statistical frequency can form part of assessment and diagnostic procedures, it is never sufficient as a sole basis of defining abnormality.
  • strength is defined as abnormal being able to have access to services, but some do not benefit from the labels due to the stigma around these labels which can cause damage to a persons mental health
