failure to function adequately

  • when a person is unable to cope with everyday life. When this happens they may not be able to meet the basic standards of hygiene and nutrition, and not be able to hold down a job. When this happens a person may not be able to cope with stress, conform to interpersonal rules or be irrational or a danger to themselves. An example is  intellectual disability disorder. They would do the diagnosis not solely based on having a low IQ but not being able to function adequately before the exam. 
  • strength is the sensible threshold for when people need professional help. Most people in the UK experience symptoms of mental disorder throughout their life. Mind a mental health charity claims 25% of the UK will experience mental health conditions, within a given year. Buyt some people may have severe symptoms to the point they are unable to function adequately.  This means that treatment can be targeted to the people who need it most.
  • limitation is that people may have unusual choices which are non standard living  choices, which can  be viewed as abnormal.  As some people may choose to deviate from social norms which can make people a danger to themselves. Also some people may also choose to live off the grid lifestyles. This means that some people’s lifestyles and choices may become restricted due to this, as theory is labelled as abnormal.
  • In some circumstances all people fail to function adequately such as bereavement as we all react differently to one another. But in this circumstance some people may also need professional help and support.
