deviation from ideal mental health

Cards (4)

  • Ideal mental health is when a person has no signs of stress, confidence, good self-esteem, independent from others, self actualisation, able to cope with stress, realistic view of the earth, and can work successfully. But a person who deviates this would be the opposite.
  • One strength is that it is highly comprehensive. Jahoda’s concept of ideal mental health highlights most of the reasons we may need to seek professional help. This means an individual's mental health is able to be discussed meaningfully with multiple professionals. One example is that psychiatrists may focus on symptoms whereas humanistic counsellors focus on self-actualisation. This means that we are able to assess ourselves and others and discuss with a range of professionals.
  • limitation is that it cannot be applied across all cultures. This is because the main criteria of Jahoda’s concept is the connection between the US and Europe. In some cultures self-actualisation can  be dimmed as self-indulgent. In Europe there is a range of values placed on personal independence. This means that it is difficult to generalise across all cultures.
  • Very few are able to meet all of Jahoda’s concepts or keep all of them up for a while. But on the other hand, it is a good practical look up for someone to work up to when improving their mental health.
