  • Nomenclature is the system of naming organic compounds
  • The stem of a name indicates the number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous carbon chain
  • The shorter carbon side chain is called an alkyl group
  • If there are more than one alkyl group, the prefixes di-, tri- and tetra- are used
  • If there are more than one alkyl group or functional group, they are ordered alphabetically
  • The carbon that the functional or alkyl group is attached to is the number used to represent it
