cell structure names and meaning

Cards (11)

  • Nucleus
The nucleus holds all of the genetic information for the entire being in strands of chromatin made up of DNA.
are in both plant and animal cells.
  • Cell Membrane
allows certain substances in and out of the cell.
are in both plant and animal cells.
  • Mitochondria
All our energy in the form of ATP is produced in the mitochondrion. These are the powerhouses of the cell.
are in both plant and animal cells.
  • Cytoplasm
It allows a fluid for chemical reactions and also to allow diffusion of solutes.
are in both plant and animal cells.
  • Ribosome
These are found either free in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum to form rough endoplasmic reticulum.
ribosomes are the sites in a cell in which protein synthesis takes place.
are in both plant and animal cells.
  • ER
ER play a primary role in the movement of substances from the nucleus. There is rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Smooth is the site of steroid synthesis. Rough is covered with ribosomes and is the site of protein synthesis.
are in both plant and animal cells.
  • Golgi
A series of membrane-bound sacs that serve to sort and distribute molecules within the cell. Nearly all biological molecules pass through the Golgi at some stage.
The Golgi takes molecules to the outer membrane to be sent outside the cell.
are in both plant and animal cells.
  • Cell Wall
It surrounds the cell membrane and is very rigid allowing for a lot of structure but limited movement.
    are only in Plant cells.
  • Chloroplast

contains green chlorophyll and is where the plants perform photosynthesis (the ability to turn sunlight and CO2 gas into food)
    are only in Plant cells.
  • Vacuole
A large area of space in the plant cell where material like water can be stored.
are found in both plant and animal cells but are bigger in plant cells.
  • Nucleolus
the largest nuclear organelle and is the primary site of ribosome subunit biogenesis in eukaryotic cells.
