  • Venipuncture has similar set/procedures on dermal puncture, the only difference is the materials
  • Phlebotomy procedure
    1. Request form serves as test request
    2. Disinfect the area by spraying alcohol and wipe it using rag or tissue
    3. Introduce yourself to the patient
    4. Explain the procedure
    5. Ask for latex sensitivity/allergy
    6. Ask if the patient fasts and about their last meal
    7. Identify the patient
    8. Start with vein selection
    9. Position the patient
    10. Palpate the vein
    11. Remove tourniquet
    12. Disinfect the site
    13. Prepare materials while air drying the site
    14. Lock and inspect the needle
    15. Re-apply the tourniquet
    16. Anchor the vein
    17. Insert the syringe
    18. Collect blood
    19. Release the tourniquet
    20. Instruct patient to apply pressure on the site
    21. Fish out the cap of the needle
    22. Dispose needle in sharps container
    23. Open tubes and transfer blood
    24. Inversion of tubes
    25. Label the tube
    26. Stick tube stickers on the request form
    27. Inspect the site after procedure
    28. Thank the patient and clean the area
  • No gloves are allowed in palpating the vein, but gloves are needed during the collection proper
  • If blood appears on the hub once you hit the vein
    Then pull the plunger to collect
  • If the plunger resists when pulling, it means you're out of the vein
