Individual Deterrence

• In Singapore, the punishment for vandalism and littering is caning. A martial artist with a bamboo rod whacks the offenders’ exposed backside; this causes major wounds but works extremely well as a deterrent. Singapore streets are some of the cleanest in the world. This is supported by right realism; they take a strict Zero Tolerance crime policy approach. Individual deterrence is focused on trying to prevent reoffending.
