Community Sentences

• Community sentences don't meet the aims of: retribution; for serious indictable offences, community services aren’t proportionate.
• Community sentences don't meet the aims of: rehabilitation; treats crime as an illness so community work wont reform / treat the offender.
• Community sentences don't meet the aims of: public protection; not being incapacitated from committing crime.
• Community sentences don't meet the aims of: individual deterrence; not enough punishment to cause fear of punishment in relation to Rational Choice Theory.
• Community sentences don't meet the aims of: general deterrence; since punishment is weak, fear of punishment isn’t instilled / internalised within the public.
