  • What are the three main sources of religion for Muslims?
    1. the Qur'an -final and perfect scripture revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammed through the angel Jibril
    2. Sunnah -practice of following Muhammed's life (as he is believed to have lived the most virtuous life)

    3. Hadith -the words of Muhammed, includes his teachings and guidance (which is not in the Qur'an)
  • The Qur'an, Sunnah and Hadith form the basis of the shar'iah, which all Muslims must follow
  • What are the six beliefs of Islam?
    1)Tawhid- belief in one God, creator of the universe
    2) Malaikah- belief in angels
    3) Kutub- belief in holy books
    4) nubuwwah- belief in the prophets
    5)Al-Quadr- belief in predestination
    6)Akhirah- belief in the day of judgement and the afterlife
  • What is the importance of Tawhid?
    -it means having absolute faith in the oneness of God and is the most important belief for Muslims; denying the oneness of Allah means committing Shirk which is meant to be the worst sin and only unforgivable sin of Islam
    -God's name, Allah, has no plural in Arabic- showing the belief in his oneness

    -(Qur'an 112:1-4) Belief in Tawhid
  • What is the importance of Malaikah?
    Muslim's believe Allah's greatness mean he does not communicate directly with humans, so he passed messages, risalah, to his prophets via the angels.
    Angels also tell Allah about the behaviour of humans

    ‘Each person has angels before him and behind, watching over him by God’s command’- Surah 13:11
    Muslims are taught to respect the Malaikah of Allah: when Muslims end their prayers they turn to the left and right and say "peace be upon you" to the angels (and anyone else they are praying next to)
  • What is the importance of Kutub?
    -Spiritual guides: Kutub includes the Qur'an, Sahifah (scrolls), Tawrat (Torah), Zabur (Psalms) and Injil (Gospels)
    -Books should be respected as, the Qur'an, is the direct and unchanged word of Allah
  • What is the importance of nubuwwah?
    -Muslims believe the prophets should be respected as they are the connection between Allah and humanity, but never worshipped
    -the nature and importance of Prophethood for Muslims is called Risalah
  • What is the importance of Al-Qadr?
    Predestination: "The Lord has created and balanced all things and has fixed their destinies and guided them"- Qur'an 87:2
    However, the belief in free will is essential as Muslims believe life is a test from Allah- and they will either be rewarded or punished in jannah or jahannam
  • What is the importance of Akhirah?
    -Belief in the afterlife and the Day of Judgement
    -Muslims believe life is a test and they will be either rewarded or punished in jannah or jahannam
  • What does the Qur'an say about Jannah?
    "those who do good will be the residents of Paradise. They will be there forever" (Qur'an 2:82)
  • What does the Qur'an say about predestination?
    "Since Allah created them, he knows what sort of deeds they would have done" -Hadith
  • Akhirah: "Anyone who believes in God and the last day of judgement, should not harm his neighbour" (stated in Hadith)
  • How are the six beliefs understood and expressed in Muslim communities?
    -Tawhid: recognises Allah as the creator, Muslims express gratitude through prayer
    -Nubuwwah: Muslims are taught, and learn about, different prophets so that they can learn from their examples
    -Kutub: Muslims may look to the Qur'an for advice to help them understand their faith better and follow Allah
    -Akhirah: Muslims live their lives knowing they will be judged accordingly on the Day of Judgement

    -recite the Shahadah during Salah, expresses belief in Tawhid
    -look to the Qur'an for advice to help understand their faith and follow Allah
    -live their life knowing Allah will judge them on this after death (Akhirah)
