Candidiasis/ thrush

• Candidiasis or thrush is a fungal infection (yeast) caused by various Candida species, Candida albicans most common
• Candida infection affects the mucous membranes and skin, occurring on all surfaces of the human body
• warm moist conditions- skin folds, mouth, vagina and nappy areas of baby
• excess use of antibiotics- beneficial bacteria in the alimentary canal are destroyed, Candida grows out of control
• weakened immune system- HIV/AIDS and cancer treatment break down immune system
• bad diet- too many refined carbohydrates and sugar are food source of Candida
• high stress levels- cortisol released, suppresses immune system and increases sugar levels
• Effects on the body

  • Symptoms vary to area affected
  • Vaginal fungal infection- severe itching, burning, grey-white discharge
  • Oral Thrush- in the mouth, causes white spots with a red base on tongue or palate, difficulty eating
• Management/ Treatment

  • Change favourable conditions
  • Improved hygiene- body parts no longer warm for periods of time
  • Probiotics- replenish beneficial bacteria in alimentary canal
  • Balanced diet- cut out refined cards and sugar
  • Stress levels- controlled
• Candida infections are easily treatable; mouthwash, cream/ointment, systemic medication
