plant cell organisation

• plant cells are organised into tissues and organs
• examples of plant tissues are: epidermal tissue ; palisade mesophyll tissue ; spongy mesophyll tissue ; xylem ; phloem and meristem tissue
• epidermal tissue covers the whole plant
• palisade mesophyll tissue is the part of the leaf where the most photosynthesis happens
• spongy mesophyll tissue contains big air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out
• xylem tissue transports water and mineral ions from the roots to the leaves
• phloem tissue transports dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant
• the epidermal tissues are covered with a waxy cuticle to help reduce water loss
• the upper epidermis is transparent so that light can pass through it
