Divisions of the Nervous System

    Cards (13)

    • What does the nervous system
      • The Central Nervous System -> spinal cord ->brain
      • Peripheral Nervous System -> Somatic Nervous System --> Autonomic -> Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous system
    • The CNS - Brain and spinal cord
The brain provides conscious awareness and is involved in all psychological processes. The brain consists of many regions, which are responsible for different functions
    • The PNS - somatic and autonomic nervous systems

The role of the PNS is to relay messages from the CNS to the rest of the body
    • What does the occipital lobe do
      Processes visual information
    • What does the temporal lobe do
      processes auditory information
    • what does the parietal lobe do
integrates information from the different senses and plays an important role in spatial navigation
    • What does the frontal lobe do
associated with higher-order functions, including planning abstract reasoning and logic
    • What does the brain stem do
connects the brain and spinal cord and controls involuntary processes, including our heartbeat, breathing and conciousness
    • What does the spinal cord do
transfers messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body. It is also responsible for simple reflex actions that do not involve the brain
    • Somatic nervous system
Facilitates communication between the CNS and the outside world. It is made up of sensory receptors that carry information to the spinal cord and brain, and motor pathways that allow the brain to control movement
    • Autonomic nervous system
Plays an important role in homeostasis, which maintains internal processes like body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. It only consists of motor pathways and has two components: the parasympathetic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system
    • Parasympathetic nervous system
Relaxes the body and returns us to our resting state. It slows our heart rate and breathing rate and reduces our blood pressure
    • Sympathetic nervous system
Involved in responses that prepare our body for fight or flight. Impulses travel from this system to organs in the body to help us prepare for action when faced with a dangerous situation.
