    Flu-like symptoms lasting 2-6 weeks

    • maculopapular rash
    • discomfort & aches
    Due to the initial immune response to infection
  • What are the signs & symptoms of AIDS?
    Can take up to 10 years to appear
    • weight loss
    • skin changes
    • GI disturbance
    • symptoms of heart/kidney failure
    • recurrent infections
    Due to direct result of HIV causing end-organ damage and/or result of immunosuppression (CD4 cell count falling)
  • What are the risk factors of HIV?
    Unprotected sex
    Vertical transmission (mother to baby)
    IV drug use (dirty needles)
    Receiving a blood transfusion, transplant or another risk-prone procedure in countries that do not have strong screening for HIV
