  • a neural integrity tests sees if the function of nerves is working
  • The peripheral NS starts at the nerveroot of L1/L2
    • A dermatome = area of skin innervated by the initial nerve root of the spine e.g. S1
    • A cutaneous = when the nerve root forms a nerve throughout the body e.g. S1 forms the sural nerve
    • so numbness on the lateral foot could be a dermatome problem or a cutaneous problem
    • the photo below is the dermatomal distribution - NEED TO LEARN
  • Neural integrity tests are for people with any neurological symptoms such as back pain, pain going beyond the buttocks and any red flag symptoms such as change in bladder and bowel function
  • Neural integrity tests:
    • Upper motor neurone testers:
    • babinski
    • clonus
    • Lower motor neurone testers:
    • myotomes
    • dermatomes
    • Reflexes:
    • hyperactivity = upper motor neurone problem
    • hypoactivity = lower motor neurone problem
