• atkinson and shiffrin proposed 3 stages of memory: sensory memory, short term memory and long term memory
• sensory register - information from senses/environment is stored in this register for a short period of time and then converted to stm
• information from stm transferred to ltm only if information is rehearsed
• maintenance rehearsal - helps keep info in stm through repetition
• if maintenance rehearsal doesnt occur, info is forgotten and lost from stm
• coding in stm is modality specific (sense specific)
