  • Cooling
Cooling systems are used to generate electricity from fossil fuels and nuclear. Cooling can be done using air, and overflow alarms can highlight leaks or failures. Water from other areas can be reused for cooling.
  • Manufacturing
Water pressure and flows can be reduced. Keeping pipes and equipment well maintained reduces the likelihood of leaks.
  • Staff Facilities
Kitchens and toilets should have flow regulators installed on taps. Toilets should have volume of flush reduced by using a cistern dam or dual flush. Urinals can have sensors installed so they only flush when used.
  • Laundry and Cleaning
In hospitality, linens and towels can be cleaned when requested, rather than daily. Upgrading washing machines so they are energy efficient and only run when full. Use a dry brush instead of a mop.
  • Government Strategies
    • Tourist tax to invest in water infrastructure.
    • Campaigns advertising tourists of the problem and how to conserve water.
    • Regulations requiring tourist businesses to cut down water usage/limit tourist numbers to reduce demand of water.
  • Reuse of Grey and Black Water
Water reuse is the process of refilling or finding another use for a product without processing it, other than cleaning. It is most commonly done with greywater which comes from sinks, showers, baths, dishwashers, washing machines. It can also be done with water from industrial processes and used for washing down and cleaning.
  • Businesses
Businesses are charged for the treatment of water when they discharge it. They can be fined if they discharge too much. Typically, greywater cannot be stored for long periods as it will undergo microbial growth, particularly in warm weather. This means it needs to be used quickly, so there needs to be significant demand for it. Some cleaning, to remove large particles, may also need to be done.
  • Blackwater
Blackwater is waste water and sewage from toilets. It can be treated and recycled to produce water for non-potable use, that means not for drinking purposes. It can be reused for flushing toilets or in industrial processes. This requires specialist equipment so isn't easy for businesses to implement.
