Cards (8)

  • role of water as a universal solvent helps with transport, digestion, excretion
  • osmosis - net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentrated solution)
  • adding cell into pure water/dilute solution: hypotonic solution. causes cell to become turgid
  • turgor pressure - pressure on the cell wall from the cell membrane pushing upon it
  • adding cell into concentrated solution: hypertonic solution. cell becomes flaccid (shrinks). also can become plasmolysis (cytoplasm is pulled away from the wall)
  • decreased mass indicates net osmosis out of the cell
  • increased mass indicates net osmosis into the cell
  • constant mass indicates no net osmosis
