role of water as a universal solvent helps with transport, digestion, excretion
osmosis - net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentrated solution)
adding cell into pure water/dilute solution: hypotonic solution. causes cell to become turgid
turgor pressure - pressure on the cell wall from the cell membrane pushing upon it
adding cell into concentrated solution: hypertonic solution. cell becomes flaccid (shrinks). also can become plasmolysis (cytoplasm is pulled away from the wall)
decreased mass indicates net osmosis out of the cell
increased mass indicates net osmosis into the cell
