One God

• Monotheism- the belief that there is one God
• Most christians believe in monotheism
• Jews of old believed in several Gods, but they only worshipped one
• The Sinai Covenant (the 10 commandments) developed a shared belief between christians and jews, which is made clear in the old testament
• Jesus quotes the shema "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one"- Deutronomy 6:4
• Israel's monotheism is not a philosophy as it is a statement presented as fact: known as ethical monotheism, or a way of life
• Ethical monotheism- the belief in one God also includes following the moral codes linked to the belief (e.g. 10 commandments)
• Ethical monotheism ties in with christian beliefs on salvation
• Ethical teaching's of Jesus show christians how christians (by obeying the teachings) can get into the Kingdom of God
