Acids, alkalis, and salts

Cards (3)

  • A base is a metal oxide or hydroxide which neutralises an acid to produce a salt and water, and an alkali is a base that dissolves in water
  • Neutralisation reactions are exothermic [produce heat]
  • Neutralisation is the reaction between the hydrogen ions in an acid and the hydroxide ions in an alkali to produce water

    The equation is:

    H+(aq) + OH-(aq) -> H2O(l)
