• the nervous system detects and reacts to stimuli
• the nervous system is made up of several main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) ; sensory neurons ; motor neurons and effectors

• effectors are cells that respond to nervous impulses, bringing about a change
• the central nervous system is coordination centre of the body and controls all bodily functions
• the connection between two neurones is called a synapse
• in a synapse, the nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the distance of two connecting neurones
