challenges

• 60% of the population live in squatter settlements and 85000 of these live in the Makoko slum where there is a lower life expectancy
• Lack of access to clean water as a result of pollution:

  • 1 toilet shared between 15 homes so many people are not able to access and instead waste goes straight into local water sources
  • Air pollution as a result of gases and waste from industries

  Contaminated water sources = health problems (e.g. cholera)
• 80% of the forest in and surrounding Lagos has been deforested for urban expansion
• Unemployment rate of 20% results in an increase in crime as people have to rely on crimes such as drug trafficking to make an income
