    • The skin forms a protecting layer covering the body
    • The outerlayer of skin consists of dead cells and is difficult for pathogens to penetrate
    • Skin also produces and oily substance called 'serub' which can kill bacteria
  • Sometimes the skin is damaged and could allow pathogens to enter the body- to stop this the skin forms scabs
  • Some parts of the body are not covered by the skin (e.g mouth, nostrils) these present openings where pathogens can enter the body so the body also has defense systems to protect us
  • When skin is damaged, pathogens can invade the body and enter the blood stream, once inside the body the pathogen can multiply and damage healthy tissues
