Discovered penicillin by accident in 1928. Experimented with what he discovered by accident and found if penicillin was diluted, bacteria disappears and killed without damaging cells (didn't work 100% of the time). In 1929, Fleming wrote about penicillin in a medical journal but no one recognised the importance of it because Fleming only used penicillin on animals to heal infection so no proof of it being useful.
1941 - Wartime need for penicillin:
England factories were already being used to produce weaponary so they couldn't be used to mass produce penicillin. In 1941, America entered the war follwoing the attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbour. American government then realised the potential of penicillin to treat wounded soldiers and made interest free loans to US companies, expensive equipment was needed. British then first mass produced 2.3 million doses of penicillin.
After the war:
Penicillin began to be maufactured and used by everyone, not just armed forces. Took time but antibiotics began to become common in the 1950s and 60s, magically going from wonder drug to ordinary everyday life saver.
