  • Water conservation:

  • Transport strategies:
    • Curitiba's Bus Rapid Transit system used dedicated bus lanes to ensure bus journeys are quick - over 700000 passengers use the buses each day
    • The city's main shopping area is pedestrianised
    Curitiba's CO2 emissions are 25% lower per capita than the average Brazilian city.
  • Waste recycling:
    • One of only eight cities which collects 100% of its waste, of which 70% is recycled
    • Government launched 'The Green Exchange Programme' - residents receive 1 kg of food or bus tickets for every 4 kg of recyclable waste collected ---> collection of 6800 tonnes of waste each year
  • Creating green space:
    • In 2007, Curitiba launched a government scheme that encouraged landowners to preserve green areas to limit urban sprawl - people who created parks were exempt from taxes.
    Almost 30 parks in the city including the 1.4 million m^2 Barigui Park - designed to absorb flood water so unsightly, expensive defences are not needed.
