Waste recycling:
One of only eight cities which collects 100% of its waste, of which 70% is recycled
Government launched 'The GreenExchangeProgramme' - residents receive 1 kg of food or bustickets for every 4 kg of recyclable waste collected ---> collection of 6800 tonnes of waste each year
Creating green space:
In 2007, Curitiba launched a government scheme that encouraged landowners to preserve green areas to limit urbansprawl - people who created parks were exempt from taxes.
Almost 30 parks in the city including the 1.4 million m^2 Barigui Park - designed to absorbfloodwater so unsightly, expensive defences are not needed.
