Ecological and Natural hazard examples

Cards (12)

  • Tropical storms/cyclones:
    • aka hurricanes or typhoons depending on the location
    • intense circular storms
    • e.g. cyclone Yasi, Queensland 2011
  • Floods:
    • induction of water in a normally dry area of land
    • can be caused by the overflow of inland or tidal water or runnoff of surface waters generally due to heavy rainfall
    • e.g. 2019-2011 Brisbane and Queensland floods
  • Landslides:
    • movement of mass rock, soil and debris down a slope under the influence of gravity
    • e.g. the Vargas tragedy 1999
  • Droughts:
    • a deficiency of rainfall substantially below the average experiences in a location over an extended period.
    • can contrinue for a season of over several years
    • e.g. Australian drought 2017-2020
  • Bushfires:
    • uncontrolled burning of nature which threaters property, life and the environment
    • e.g. 2009 black saturday fires
  • Earthquakes:
    • seismic waves of energy radiating from faults in all directions resulting in violent shacking of earths surface
    • significant hazard to communities esspecially ones located on tectonic plate boundaries
    • e.g. 2011 Tohoku Japan earthquake
  • Volcanoes:
    • vents from earths surface that allows for magma to escape from interior, causing eruption of lava and gaz into atmosphere
    • e.g. Mt Pinatubo 1991
  • Infectiouse disease:
    • describes diseases that can spread from one person to another either directly or indirectly.
    • e.g. HIV/AIDS in East and Southern Africa
  • Animal transmitted diseases:
    • subcategory of infectious disease, can also be referred to as vectorborne diseases, transmitted to humans from animals.
    • e.g. rabies in Australia
  • Water bourne deases:
    • subcatagory of infectiouse disease caused bt microorganism (such as bacteria, virusus, protoza, parasites) contaminating the water
    • e.g. Yemen choloera crisis 2019
  • Animal invasions:
    • animals not native to a specific ecosystem, there introduction tends to cause harm to the environment, economy, or human health
    • e.g. cane toads in Australia
  • Chemical hazard:
    • incidents being caused by a toxic substance which can cause harm to people and the environment
    • e.g. 2010 deepwater horizon oil spill
