• Volvulus with malrotation

  Twisting of the intestine, leading to obstruction of the passage of feces and compromise of the blood supply to the loop of intestine involved
• Appendicitis


  Inflammation of the appendix, the most common cause of abdominal surgery in children
• Short bowel/short-gut syndrome

  Absorptive disorder in which there is not sufficient bowel surface area in the small intestine for proper nutrient absorption
• Celiac disease/malabsorption syndrome/gluten-induced enteropathy/celiac sprue

  • Immune-mediated abnormal response to gluten, the protein in wheat and related proteins in rye, barley and possibly oats, in a genetically susceptible individual
  • Flattening of the fingerlike projections (villi) of the small intestine occurs, preventing absorption of foods, especially fat
• Disorders caused by food, vitamin and mineral deficiencies
