  • works by detecting blood oxygenation flows that occur due to neural activity in specific parts of the brain. brain active high blood oxygenation flows to meet blood flow demand is directed to the area (haemodynamic response)
  • +not rely on radiation. if done correctly it is risk free, straightforward and non invasive. also produces images at high spatial resolution mm, therefore clear image of localisation. means that fMRIs can provide a detailed image safely
  • -expensive and poor temporal resolution 5 sec time lag behind image on screen and initial firing of neural activity. means that it does not represent real time activity
