Berlin wall 1961

• 1961 August - Khrushchev ordered soldiers in east germany to build barbed wire fence
• 1961 onwards - the wall continued to get stronger, turned into concrete, then got longer. No one could cross
• Consequences-

  • People were killed trying to cross
  • Families were divided
  • The west actually helped the east (fireman etc)
• JFK visited berlin in 1963

  • He was treated well
  • Claimed that building a wall was better than war
