Elements, Isotopes & Relative Atomic Mass

Cards (7)

  • In an element all of the atoms are the same
  • There are around 100 different elements
  • Isotopes are different forms of the same element, that have the same number of protons, but a different number of nuetrons.
  • For example the isotopes of carbon, carbon 12 and carbon 13, will chemically react the same way, but have different masses.
  • Relative Atomic Mass
Average mass of all the isotopes that make up an element
  • Relative Atomic Mass equation
(isotope abundance x isotope mass) / abundances of all isotopes
  • Label the diagram
