Wheelchair Safety Checks

• • need to check the brake mechanism - when you pull/push the lever, a bar should push against the tire to stop the chair moving
  • patient should know how to use it
• • tires must be pumped up/solid
  • if theyre flat it will be hard to move and the brake mechanism wont work
• • the rim shouldnt have any bits of metal sticking out of it as it could cut pts
• • the foot plate must be firm via the locking mechanism
  • they should be parallel to the ground, but not too low that theyre at risk of hitting anything in the ground, so adjust the height also in accordance to height of pts
• • the arm plates must be locked in (curved part at the front)
• • the material of the seat and back must be in tact, if theres any tears do not use it
