  • He strengthened British control of India, helping to establish India as part of the British Empire.

  • He faced accusations of corruption, mismanagement and poor military judgement from political rivals.
  • In England, Hastings faced trial in 1787 over concerns about British standards in India. Found not guilty in 1795.
