Acid Base review

Cards (6)

  • Empirical properties of acids:
    • sour
    • litmus: blue to red
    • reactive with metals (H2 gas) and carbons (CO2)
    • pH < 7
    • conduct (electrolyte solution)
  • pH and pOH:
    • pH = - log [H3O+]
    • pOH = -log [OH-]
    • [H3O+] = 10^-pH
    • [OH-] = 10^-pOH
    • pH + pOH = 14
  • Sig dig rules:
    • pH/pOH sig digs start after the decimal
    • [] have normal sig dig rules
  • Strong acids ionize completely in water; weak acids inize partially (measured and quantified by Ka)
  • string bases: metal hydroxides that dissociate 100% and produce OH- directly
  • weak bases: any compound that reacts with water to produce OH- (must have water and a Kb value)
