SELF/PEER ASSESSMENT

Cards (16)

  • SELF-EVALUATION or SELF-ASSESSMENT
is a process where students are taught
    to assess their performance against
    pre-determined standard criteria and it
involves the students in goal setting and
    more informal, dynamic self-regulation
    and self-reflection.
  • ADVANTAGES OF SELF-ASSESSMENT
    1. Encourages students to critically reflect their own learning
    progress and performance
    2. Encourages students to be
more responsible for their own learning
    3. Helps students become autonomous learners
    4.Helps students be more aware
    of their weakness and strength
    5. Helps students develop their judgmental skills
    6. There is no peer pressure when students evaluate themselves
  • DISADVANTAGES OF SELF-ASSESSMENT
    1. Self-assessment can be subjective because students may not be sincere and may even over-evaluate their own performance
    2. Time consuming for students
    3. Students may not be familiar with the assessment criteria.
  • PEER EVALUATION
    • is the assessment of students' work by other students of the same status. Students often undertake peer assessment with formal self- assessment.
    • Valuable in helping students to learn from each other by listening, analyzing and problem solving. It gives students the opportunity to encounter diversity in different ways, critique and judge and be responsible for their own learning
  • Advantage
Judgement by peers as a motivator
    • When students are assessed by their peers, they become accountable not only to instructors but also to their fellow students.
    • Research suggests that being judged by peers serves as a better motivator for producing high-quality work.
  • Advantage
    Group Cohesion
    Peer-to-peer accountability ensures that
social loafing is unlikely. Each team member
knows they will be assessed by their peers,
    which improves team dynamics
  • Mutual improvement
    • By assessing each other’s work, students engage in thoughtful reflection on the activity’s objectives.
    • The process of evaluating others’ work also enhances their ability to evaluate their own work better.
  • Advantage
    Opportunity for Growth
    • Incorporating formative peer evaluations during the course allows students to identify knowledge gaps, correct negative behaviors,
    and continually improve
  • Advantage
    Informed Grading
    • Grading based solely on individual assessments (such as RATs or application cases) may not capture the full picture of team dynamics.
    • Including peer evaluation provides a more
informed grading process, rewarding students who actively contributed to the work
  • Disadvantages (Peer-evaluation)
    Bias and Subjectivity
Peer evaluations can be influenced by personal biases, friendships, or conflicts within the team.
    • Some students may rate their peers unfairly, leading to inaccurate
    assessments.
  • Disadvantages (Peer-evaluation
    Lack of Expertise
    • Peers may not have the expertise to evaluate complex tasks accurately.
    • For specialized projects, relying solely on peer evaluations might not yield reliable results.
  • Disadvantages (Peer-evaluation
    Inconsistency
    Different students may apply
    varying standards when assessing
    their peers.
    • This inconsistency can affect the
    overall fairness of the evaluation
    process.
  • Disadvantages (Peer-evaluation
    Conflict and Tension
    • Peer evaluations can lead to disagreements or strained
    relationships within the team.
    • Disputes over ratings or comments
    may arise, affecting team cohesion.
  • Disadvantages (Peer-evaluation
    Time consuming
    • Administering peer evaluations
    requires additional time and effort.
    Collecting, analyzing, and
  • Disadvantages (Peer-evaluation
    Fear of Retaliation
    • Students may hesitate to provide
    honest feedback if they fear
    retaliation from their peers.
    • This fear can compromise the authenticity of the evaluations.
  • Disadvantages (Peer-evaluation)
    Lack of Accountability for Evaluators
    • While students are accountable for
their work, there’s no direct accountability for the quality of
    their evaluations.
    • Some students may not take the process seriously.
