Central executive (CE)-Controls working memory by monitoring incoming data, allocating limited attentional resources and subsystems to tasks.
Phonological loop (PL)Subsystem processing auditory/verbal material. Subdivided into: phonological store and auditory process
Phonological store-Temporary storage of verbal material.
Articulatory process-Maintenance rehearsal of verbal material.
Visuo-spatial sketchpad (VSS)Processes visual and spatial information by storing (visual cache) and manipulating it (inner scribe).
Episodic buffer (EB)Integrates information processed in the other subsystems and links with LTM.
One strength of WMM is there is evidenced for dual task performance. Baddeley's football/driving study in 1975 showed ppts couldn't drive and watch football, but could drive and listen to music as they use different features of WMM.
one limitation of WMM is Baddeley said the central executive is the most important but least understood component.
one strength is KF had poor memory for verbal but normal for visual- implies that his PL was impaired but his VSS was intact. However it is unsure if KF had other cognitive impairments as his accident was traumatic.
