Sanctions against criminal actions- prison is used when a crime is so serious no other sentence will do. Community sentences is when criminals will have to do unpaid work. Fines are for less severe offences and discharges are used for the least serious offences.
Informal sanctions- a common way for deviant behaviour to be sanctioned. This can include social disapproval, bullying, and social exclusion.
Formal sanctions- a way to punish any deviant behaviour that is also criminal, this can include prison, community sentences, fines and a discharge.
Laws vs norms- crime is a behaviour that breaks the formal laws, whereas deviance is any violation of society's norms.
Different sanctions against crime and deviance- a clear distinction between crime and deviance is that they are sanctioned differently. Crime is sanctioned formally but deviant acts are informal.
