  • Lombroso's theory- Cesare Lombroso was an Italian psychiatrist who made a comparison of almost 400 non-criminal Italian soldiers and 90 'lunatics'. The individuals studied were alive and dead.
  • Lombroso took measurements of skull sizes and deformities. He stated that criminals were physically different, meaning criminals were born criminal. They were known to have features like large ears and long arms.
  • Lombroso argued that criminals have atavistic facial features, a throwback to the primates. These features include sloping forehead, large jaw and high cheekbones. He claimed they were unable to control their impulses with a reduced sensitivity to pain.
  • Features of a thief- expressive face, wandering eyes and small,flattened nose. Murderer- cold glassy stares, curly hair and bloodshot eyes. Sex offender- thick lips and protruding ears. Female offenders- short, dark hair and small skull. Lombroso also associated tattoos with criminals.
